mode transport planning attended the launch of the Mayor’s Transport Strategy at City Hall, which was successfully approved by the London Assembly.  This strategy provides the platform to deliver the Mayors ambitious vision for the future of transport within London, which is built around the central aim of 80 per cent of all trips in London to be made on foot, by cycle or using public transport by 2041!

To achieve this vision, the transport strategy puts forward 108 proposals, which are underpinned by 26 key policies, which form the core of strategy:

  • The strategy is centred around a ‘Healthy Streets’ and ‘Health People’ approach, which seeks to creates streets and street networks that encourage walking, cycling and public transport use, rather than being designed for cars. A great example of this is the planned transformation of Oxford Street, which will restrict traffic to provide a better environment for pedestrians and cyclists. mode transport planning fully supports this approach and have delivered high quality public realm schemes with TfL as part of their own ‘Better Streets‘ initiative in the past we look forward to helping the Mayor achieve this in the coming years.
  • To make commuting into London simpler, the Transport Strategy outlines the commitment to provide state of the art public transport services such as the Elizabeth Line, which will provide direct access to London Paddington, Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road from Reading and Heathrow in the west and Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. All 41 stations on the line will be accessible, and it is expected to serve around 200 million people each year. This, alongside with the proposed capacity improvements to the both the Hammersmith and City line and Piccadilly line, has the potential to shift people from the private car to public transport, dramatically reducing the number of vehicles on London’s streets.
  • To help combat road casualties, the mayor has set out his ‘Vision Zero’ for road danger in London, where it sets out its ambition for no-one to be killed by a London bus by 2030, and for all deaths and serious injuries from road collisions to be eliminated from London’s streets by 2041; and
  • The introduction of the Toxicity Charge (or T-charge) in Central London, which will help the tackle existing air quality issues within London. This, in conjuncture within the new Ultra-Low Emission bus services will improve the health and livelihood of people working in Central London.

Overall the central aim of the Mayors Transport Strategy is highly ambitious (and rightly so), and the continues to go into great detail on not only how it can be achieved, but why it needs to be for the benefit of all Londoners.
